Almost certain to be granted exemption were the Christian pacifists with a record of speaking out against violence.

Next comes a boy with long hair and a thin face. For two years he has been a full-time worker in a religious sect, preaching and distributing pamphlets. He refuses to don a uniform and take an oath because he says he recognises only the authority of God. The university professor asks his interpretation of Christ’s attitude to war. The boy replies in a steady voice, using many quotations from the Bible. The judge asks the objector if he feels no responsibility to the state. ‘Certainly,’ says the boy, ‘but I refuse to kill or accept the authority of anyone but God.’ The discussion is fascinating – this youngster against the five men who are trying to determine what is in his mind and trying to test the validity of his conscience. After nearly half an hour he is asked if he would work on a farm as a civilian. This he agrees to do; agrees, that is, provided that he can continue to preach.7
